totalico

how to use

getting started in five steps

No tutorial videos. No setup wizard. Just open the home page and follow these.

1 · create a group

On the home page, give the group a name (“Lisbon trip”, “Flat 3B”), your own name, and pick a default currency. That's it — the group exists.

The default currency is what new expenses fall back to and what balances are shown in. You can still add expenses in other currencies later.

2 · share the link

Use copy share link in the group header and send it to whoever's splitting with you. No invitations to accept — opening the link is all they need to do.

Anyone with the link can read and edit the group, so keep it to people you actually want there. There is no way to share a group “read-only”.

3 · add members

Scroll to the members section and add everyone who'll be involved by name. Members can also rename themselves later from group settings.

4 · add expenses

Tap add expense from the group page. Fill in:

  • What for? — a short description (“dinner at Toca da Lua”).
  • Amount and currency — any currency the group has enabled in settings.
  • Paid by — whoever fronted the money.
  • Split — pick how to divide it:
    • equal — divide evenly across the checked members.
    • exact — type each person's exact share. Must sum to the total.
    • percent — each person's share as a % of the total. Must sum to 100.
    • shares — weighted units (e.g. 2 shares costs twice 1 share).

Use the pencil ✎ on any expense to edit it; the ✕ deletes it.

5 · settle up

Tap settle up on the group page. Pick the currency you want to settle in, and totalico will list the smallest possible number of payments that brings everyone to zero. Tap mark paid after each transfer to record it.

Expenses in different currencies are converted at the current rate so you see one combined total per person.

tips

  • If you sign in (top-right), groups you've opened are remembered under my groups, available on any device you sign in on. The people you split with don't need to do this.
  • The (i) icons next to fields explain anything that isn't obvious — tap one any time.
  • Under group settings you can pick which currencies the group is allowed to use, and how many decimals to show across the app (BHD shows 3 by default, JPY 0, USD 2 — set them all the same with the “decimals shown” picker).
